Time. It’s what the world revolves around. It’s what our lives revolve around. We have to plan everything we do around time. We get up at a certain time. We go to work at a certain time. We go to bed at a certain time. We wait for time to heal our pain. It takes time to make our businesses successful. It takes time to meet “the one” and fall in love. It takes time to know if we really will live happily ever after.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we didn’t have to rely on time to know exactly what direction our lives will take? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could predict precisely what will happen in every aspect of our lives from now until the day we leave this earth? I think it would be fantastic. No more guessing games. No more wondering how things are going to turn out. No more broken hearts. No more unhappy endings.
Doesn’t that all sound great?
Sometimes, it really does sound great. Imagine how different our lives could be if we didn’t have to wait for time. Then again, maybe it wouldn’t be as great as it sounds. Our lives would probably be a whole lot less interesting because there’d be no more surprises to make our lives interesting and exciting. We would already know how things would happen. It’d almost be like we could predict our futures, and while for some things in life, the thought of knowing how things are going to turn out beforehand sounds incredibly appealing, it would probably do nothing more than make our lives dull and boring. There’d be no adventure, no excitement left to count on, and that would just be devastating.
I started thinking about all this the other day when I heard this song called “Only Time” by Enya play on a movie I was watching called “Sweet November.” I’ve posted the music video below so you can listen to it. It’s a beautiful song.
Here are the lyrics:
Who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time
And who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose, only time
Who can say why your heart sighs
As your love flies, only time
And who can say why your heart cries
When your love lies, only time
Who can say when the roads meet
That love might be in your heart
And who can say when the day sleeps
If the night keeps all your heart
Night keeps all your heart
Who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose
And who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time
Who knows? Only time
This song got me thinking a lot more about some things I’ve had going on in my life, and I started wondering how different things might be if time wasn’t a factor. There are definitely things that have happened in my life that I wish I’d have known were going to happen. Maybe I could have changed the outcome. Maybe I could have changed the hurt they caused me and others.
And then there are things that I wish I could know how they’re going to turn out in the future. Will they make me happy? Will they cause me pain? Will they have been a huge mistake? Will they be the best things to ever happen?
If we didn’t have to rely on time to know how our lives are going to turn out, we’d never have any regrets about the things we’ve done or said. I can’t honestly say that I have regrets, but there are things that if I could do them again, I’d do them differently, just to guide my life onto a different path that would have a happier outcome than the original path did.
What about you? What are your thoughts on time and having to rely on time to know where we’ll end up? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. I’d love to hear them!
